IST is ranked 6th by HEC as an Engineering and Technology university in Pakistan. IST’s research and development in the field of space sciences is commendable. Looking at the merit cut-off for admission in IST, which ranges between 81-90%, it can be said that the students admitted are talented and just need to be polished a bit so as to increase the amount of academic competitiveness.
Even though the curriculum is up to date and of a reasonable difficulty level, it is seen that it’s not aptly interactive, which basically promotes rote learning rather than understanding the concepts. For instance, there is a lack of practical approach towards the concepts which are essential in aerospace engineering. Also, the grading policy comes off to be strict.
Moreover, the students currently studying in IST are of the view that fresh graduates from universities around Pakistan are hired as instructors for the basic courses (in the first one or two years) taught in undergraduate programs. This means the instructors are less experienced and may not know how to deal with various problems the students may encounter while studying. Nevertheless, the instructors at higher levels, i.e. in the junior and senior years are more experienced with apt knowledge of their subject.
Additionally, the institute is also collaborated with foreign universities of China and United Kingdom for economically granting the students with foreign degrees of Master and PhD programs. The foreign universities include: Beihang University (BUAA), China, Northwestern Polytechnic University (NWPU), China, University of Surrey (UniS), UK. Bearing in mind that IST has only been set up for over a decade, its rapid progression in the academic world is truly praise worthy.
